thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe is investing a low double-digit million amount to expand its Stuttgart location, with a focus on digitalization and capacity expansion.
Construction of the new slitting and packaging plants began in August, which will increase the production capacity of the facility to 350,000 tons per year. Another key aspect of the investment is the construction of a new 2,000 square meter hall, which will be used for shipping and finished materials from September 2025 onwards.
Branch manager Hans Pfaff from Stuttgart comments, "With the approval of this substantial investment and the trust from thyssenkrupp, we underline our claim as the leading steel service center in Europe. I am very pleased and it also shows that Stuttgart is a location for sustainable and future-oriented steel processing. Moreover, the jobs here are sustainably secured."
thyssenkrupp Materials IoT Supports with Digitalization
A key element of the expansion is the implementation of cutting-edge technologies, including a fully automated digital setup and production monitoring system. These innovations are expected to boost productivity by utilizing intelligent networking and digital communication tools from thyssenkrupp Materials IoT. Foremost among these is toii®, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platform and MES (Manufacturing Execution System), which enables seamless interaction between machines, systems, and production staff.
The new facilities also place great emphasis on sustainability, according to the company's press release. The new slitting line will include a drive system that is 20% more energy efficient and features energy recovery, complemented by a modern photovoltaic system. In the packaging area, switching from traditional steel strapping to recyclable PET strapping will significantly contribute to reducing CO2 emissions.
With the expansions of manufacturing capacities and service spectrum, the company responds to comprehensive market requirements, says Marcus Wöhl, CEO of thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe: "A modern service center must meet increasing customer demands in terms of flexibility, quality, and material competence and diversity. We are competitively positioning ourselves with this new investment while simultaneously pursuing our digitally supported sustainability strategy: from our own processes and emissions of our processed products to the entire supply chain."
